‘Y&R’ To Air Special Jeanne Cooper Tribute Episode May 28

imageLOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — “The Young and the Restless” announced Friday they will air a special tribute episode honoring the late Jeanne Cooper on May 28.

Cooper, a cast member for nearly the show’s entire 40-year run, died Wednesday. She was 84.

The legendary star — she played venerable rich grande dame Katherine Chancellor — was one of the show’s most popular cast members, on or off-screen.

The tribute will celebrate Cooper’s life.

CBS announced cast members, friends and family will gather on set next week to share memories. Those tributes will make up the special as will Cooper’s greatest moments on the show.

It was unclear if Cooper’s son, actor Corbin Bernsen (“LA Law,” “Psych”) would take part. But he posted a photo on Facebook Friday showing a make-shift memorial cast and crew put together outside her dressing room door. He wrote, “I want to share a beautiful moment I had yesterday while visiting ‘The Young and the Restless’. It is of my mom’s dressing room door, which, for now remains closed. But the tributes outside are just… staggering. I wasn’t sure if I was ready to see it but decided to anyway. I’m glad I did.”

“Jeanne Cooper was a legend and we want to give her the tribute she deserves,” said Angelica McDaniel, Senior Vice President, Daytime CBS. “The cast will honor their longtime friend, family member and co-worker in the greatest way possible, as we celebrate her life and vibrant spirit and share it with the audience who loved her as much as we did.”

I am so pleased at the way the Y&R writers have handled Jeanne Cooper’s death. First of all, they didn’t rush anything to screen, opting for the Memorial Show on 5/28. It was beautiful and heart-rending at the same time; plus it gave her colleagues a chance to share their own grief in a relaxed setting. After waiting for months to learn of Kathryn’s death, it, too, has been eloquent and very true to her character. I will be delighted to see just how they’ve dealt with all the loose ends that will need to be tied off as this character leaves the show. I’ve shed many more tears as it gets closer and closer, though we’ve been waiting anxiously to see what they’ve done. Kudos to Y&R writers for once again opting to share our beloved Kate’s passing in a normal manner I’m sure it’ll give long-time friends the chance to join castmates in a fitting tribute to one of the screen’s most-loved women. Thank you so much for this “normal” ending to a beautiful career by a talented and lovely women. RIP, Jeanne, RIP!

When I learned that Jeanne Cooper had died, I cried. She and all cast members of Y & R have come into myhome via television for their 40 years. They are just like my extended family. I would certainly hope that you would never attempt to recast her role. That would be impossible. Thanks to all for 40 great years.

  4. BJ says:

You fought the good fight your race is done. RIP (Katherine Chancellor) Jeannie Cooper. You will sorely be missed. The soap will never be the same without you. No one can take your pkace. You brought a rawness that can’t be duplicated. So again RIP.

  5. Sharon Hege says:

Rest in Peace Mrs.C…you will truly missed

  6. Diane says:

I will miss her greatly I have been a fan of Y&R since it’s beginning.

  7. Carol says:

I am sure this is a hard time for her family – literal and fictional. I hope they DON’T just say she is on a cruise with Murphy. So many people are written out of soaps that way – leaves the door open for their return. Ms. Cooper will not be returning as Katherine, and no one else will. Give her a respectful memorial service written in as part of the soap for closure. The Memorial on the 28th is heartfelt from fellow actors/actresses, continue it with story characters. Mrs. Chancelor can pass peacefully in her sleep just as Ms. Cooper.

With sympathy to family and friends,
    R. I. P. Jeanne Cooper

I loved Mrs. c watched her and the Y ^R from the time I was a little girl and my grandma got me into it…….when I was little I really thought they must have been family or something the way my grandma would get so worked up about what was goiing on in the show……..she had to sit me down and explain it all to me……I still find myself getting upset and a part of the show at 51 yrs old……..I love Mrs. C and I would love love to see a special where they brought all of the old cast members back for a memorial in her honor…….don’t you dare try to recast anyone in her role no one would like it………….we all feel really stongly about this……..we all love and respect her….didn’t like you killing off john abbott but at least he was brought back as a ghost now and then……..for all of us to know she is gone in real life and have you bring another person to play her part won’t sit well with anyone……..let her rest in peace and instead spend the time where we all are with grief and respect for her and her family for what and who she was………a grand woman……..I just wish I had the chance to meet this fine woman……Rip

I Miss hee Tremendously. I was Completely Devestated when I heard the news. I cried for day’s. I couldn’t stop the tears from falling & the pain of her passing is still unbearable. I’ve watched Mrs. C since 1976, I’m nearly 43 now. I always felt like she was part of my family. When she was taken from us, I felt like I lost my Gtandma all over again. :-( there will never be anyone like her ever again. I know many hearts were broken the day she passed. My heart andy prayers go out to Everyone who Loves her as much as I do…. including her family. Especially her family. I’m Grateful to Y&R for this Tribute to this Grand Dame. I Won’t Miss it for Anything. Even though I know It’s going to make me bawl like a baby all over again. God got the Prettiest Angel the day he brought her to her Heavenly home. RIP Dear Lady. You Are Loved & Missed Tremendously!

  23. annette munoz says:

I have always been a fan of the Y&R. I was truly sad when I had found out that Jeanne Cooper (Mrs. C) had taken ill. I thought about her on a daily basis almost like I knew her as my own mother. When I heard that she was getting to go home from the hospital I thought to myself, WOW she will be back on the show in a few week’s. But then when I had found out that she had passed away I was very sad. Jeanne Cooper without a doubt made the Y&R the best show to watch. I watched the tribute today when the other actors and actresses were giving tribute to her. I thought it was fantastic and it made me feel like I knew the whole cast. I will miss this wonderful lady like I miss my own mom. So to all the Y&R cast’s keep up the great work that you do because Mrs. C is watching.

I remember the very 1st episode of he young and the restless I was around 9 years old and my mother and I sat down and watched it. Over the years I have watched this show, The Duchess was one in a million some loved her and some loved her. But over the years all who knew her knew she was a savy business womaan who was for the most part a fair lady who knew her stuff. I just Loved Jeanie’s role on Y&R. Wish I could of met her in person. I always say you can read a person thru their eyes, and Jeanie must of been a lovley person because she had the most beautiful blue eyes that you could just see to her golden heart. Jeanie you will be sadly missed and always loved.
