Are you sitting down? I have some big news to share! According to E! News, Michelle Stafford is leaving Y&R after 16 years. Michelle has been nominated 10 times for a Daytime Emmy in the Outstanding Leading Actress in a Drama category. Stafford won the award in 1997 and again in 2004.
During her tenor on Y &R she did leave the show between 1997 and 2000. During that time another actress assumed her role until her return. There is no official word on when she will exit. Do you think they will recast her role or simply write her out?
Remember the wonderful video spotlights that were filmed to honor Y & R’s 40th anniversary? The actress during the spotlight commented, “I was actually told that I would be recurring and that I would only be on for six weeks. But I knew in my mind that that wasn’t going to happen.” She also talked about how she knew her character would “take off” and that she loved playing Phyllis.
Currently Phyllis is in a relationship with Jack who is notoriously unlucky at love. Phyllis recently moved into to Abbott Manor, much to the upset of Jack’s sister Traci. Jack’s other sister Ashley also does not approve of the relationship either. Actually, I am not sure anyone in town thinks they have a chance. If the character is not recast, I guess another lonely time is in the future for Jack.
Phyllis has had some tough times recently and some great story lines. There are many more tales to tell with her character. However, you can also see her relationship going south and her being fed up with her sister’s impending marriage to her ex. That could drive her out of town. Perhaps she could go and live near Daniel and her granddaughter.
Speaking of her sister, doesn’t it bother you that she is with Nick? Phyllis can be an awful human being, but Nick with her sister is just weird. Can you imagine being in that position? Do you think Avery should stay with Nick or go for hunky Dylan with the heart of gold?
This news of Stafford’s departure is difficult as fans are also still reeling from the death of beloved Jeanne Cooper. The show will air a tribute to Copper on May 28. Executive Producer Jill Farren Phelps told TV Guide that episodes with Cooper had been taped for airing in advance so we will still see scenes with Katherine perhaps until July. Eventually though, there will be closure and Katherine will pass away. In the past, Michael Learned would fill in temporarily for Cooper, but will not take over the role. Katherine will not be recast. How do you think they will handle the death of Mrs. C? Do you think it is the right decision to not recast?
