Who Was The REAL John Wayne?

Living up to the name John Wayne must have been tough for the man. After all, he was a huge star playing in 169 movies in his lifetime. Many celebrities must have it hard to live up to the persona they have to live up to, to keep their name in good shape. Not only do they have to act perfect and live perfect, but they also have to look perfect. There is no wonder many of them commit suicide or overdose on drugs these days.

Back to John Wayne now: In a new biography written about him by Scott Eyman, the author reveals the real John Wayne very few people knew. Some fans might think they know everything about him but here are some shocking things some of you might not have heard of.

His failed marriages

John Wayne was not married just once, or twice, but three times and all three of them failed. Also, he not only had three failed marriages but he also struggled hard to get along with his children. The new biography reveals he failed in all of his marriages because he was an unfaithful husband to all of them.

Didn’t feel financially secure

Another thing the new biography reveals is that he did not work until he died because he wanted to and loved acting, yet he worked until his death because since he was often betrayed by friends and even made bad business decisions, he never felt financially secure in his life.

Alcohol and Cigarettes

Because he fought with his inner demons so much and felt guilty a lot about his actions, he smoked up to six packs of cigarettes a day and drank a lot every day. His second wife even accused him of not only cheating on her but also of emotional and physical abuse she said she endured from him. However, he said in the biography that he was quick to apologize if his temper got the best of him.

A Quote from John Wayne

“The guy you see on the screen really isn’t me. I’m Duke Morrison and I never was and never will be a film personality like John Wayne. I knew him well. I’m one of his closest students.  I have to be. I make a living out of him.”

However, the new biography about Wayne reveals that the role of real life playing John Wayne was tearing him apart off-screen.

John Wayne died from stomach cancer in 1979 at the age of 72. However, before he died, he gave every crew member and cast member who worked with him a coffee mug that said, ‘thank you.’

Now you know who the real ‘John Wayne’ was. What do you think about this?
