The Acting Career of Lyle Waggoner

Gorgeous looks will only get an actor so far, Lyle Waggoner does have the right stuff. There are times when life throws a curveball and causes plans to shatter like a windowpane. Lyle was born in Kansas City, Kansas and married to Sharon Kennedy and they have two kids. Perhaps life changed for this prominent TV actor. Could have the tension between him and Lynda Carter that derailed a budding career? Like so many actors that aspired to a different level, he left the scene for a shot in the political limelight. He was elected mayor of Encino, California in 1976.

Early Years

Waggoner’s early years were spent as a door-to-door salesperson, before landing an acting gig with “Li’L Abner.” In California, he worked on commercials and screen tested for Universal and signed with M.G.M, before Twentieth Century Fox. He appeared on Gunsmoke as Aikens on the Wishbone episode.  He appeared as the deputy on Swamp Country in 1966, the same year that Wishbone was released. He stayed with Swamp Country for a year and appeared in Lost in Space in the “Deadliest of the Species,” as the Mechanical Man 1. After a few other side bits, he joined the Carol Burnett Show in London (TV movie, 1970).  He worked on the Carol Burnett Show from 1967-1974 before leaving the show permanently. He was the first Playgirl centerfold and was featured in June 1973.

The fall from Stardom

After the Playgirl incident of 73, he left the Carol Burnett Show under mutual agreement with the producer. He took his most memorable role in 1975 from the Wonder Woman show, as Steve Trevor. After a while during the show, there was a problem between them over their looks. They both moved on and his last show was in 2005, but he owns one of the largest trailer rental dealerships in the U.S.
