Rockford Files – Favorite Supporting Characters

“With friends like Angel…”

The Rockford Files series starred private investigator Jim Rockford (played by James Garner) who is far from your average, everyday PI.

The main character doesn’t make the whole show, however. The fact is that some of the longest-standing shows today don’t just have interesting leads but also interesting supporting characters. The Rockford Files definitely featured a cast of interesting characters including:

Rocky Rockford

Who can forget Jim Rockford’s crusty dad Joseph (usually called Rocky)? A retired truck driver, Rocky is a very visible character throughout the series. Although he worries about his son’s career because of the danger he occassionally lends a hand to help solve some of Jim’s cases.

Dennis Becker

Becker is a Sergeant friend of Rockford working for the Los Angeles Police Department. His interaction with Rockford is interesting to watch considering Rockford’s job. Becker is eventually promoted to Lieutenant in Season 5.

Douglas J. “Doug” Chapman

He’s played by James Luisi and is another officer for the Los Angeles Police Department. Prior to Becker’s promotion in Season 5, Chapman was Becker’s boss. He and Rockford have recurring problems with each other. These guys are frustrated whenever the come in contact with each other. Still, it’s nice to watch the interaction between these two characters as the show progresses.

Evelyn “Angel” Martin

Played by Stuart Margolin, Angel provides a bit more action in the life of Jim Rockford. He’s actually a con-artist who shared Rockford’s cell during his prison days. The relationship between Jim and Angel is intriguing. Angel often gets Jim in trouble thanks to his less than savory ways of dealing with life. Even with that, the two manage to remain friends.

Beth Davenport

Beth is Rockford’s attorney. It’s implied in the show that at some point, the two were actually in a relationship. She’s stubborn but has an idealistic streak which makes her extremely likeable. Unfortunately, she didn’t stay too long in the show and was replaced by another attorney John Cooper.

Megan Dougherty

Dougherty is another of the interesting personalities in the show. She’s portrayed as a love interest for Rockford. Later, however, it was revealed that she became engaged to another man. Played by Kathryn Harrold, Dougherty is a blind psychiatrist. She’s very independent and appeared several times during the 5th and 6th seasons.

Later, however, it was revealed that she became engaged to another man.

There are many more characters who helped make the Rockford Files such an interesting and successful series. These characters are just a sample.

Without a doubt, the Rockford Files is one of the hallmarks of great TV. It was named #39 of TV Guide’s 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time in 2002. The Rockford Files still continues in syndication today. That’s pretty amazing considering  the series actually ran from September 13 1974 to January 10, 1980.

  2. David B. Mustard says:

Isaac Hayes as Gandolph Fitch and Bo Hopkins as John Cooper also had very memorable rolls in The Rockford Files

  3. Pogo says:

I have a friend who is another Angel and My dad was Rocky all over. He was a retired Truck driver and he beleave that the government was always right. He found kindness in everyone he met. He told everyone his story about trucking. He passed several years ago and I really miss Him. I had the real Rocky as a dad. So I watch the Rockford Files and Rocky reminds me of my Dear Dad.

  4. Robert Wells says:

Angel,Rocky, and Becker were all key to the series. It survived the depature of Beth Davenport,as well as the comings and goings of other characters like Gandy,Megan, Officer Billings, and L.J. to name a few. Interesting that the last show of the series,”Deadlock in Parma”,had none of the major players other than Jim.
