Madea is a fictional character created and portrayed by Tyler Perry. When imagining the character of Madea, think of the character of Eddie Murphy’s mother in The Nutty Professor, crossed with Whoopi Goldberg in the funny movie The Sister Act with a really short temper.
What makes the Madea character popular is that her personality is very unique. Despite her efforts to be righteous, she always seems to get herself into trouble, even landing herself into jail many times over. Her aggressive, funny antics, which are truly unladylike for a 60-something, huge, Africa–American woman is hilarious. Another thing that makes Madea shows and movies a hit with the audience is the family aspect of the stories.
Madea’s situations always revolve around her crazy family and the funny-and-loud way they talk to each other. Tyler Perry is an African-American, and their lives are mostly reflected in the feature films he does for Madea. But while many are entertained, some are not.
Madea featured films can be viewed even on the internet. This means it is easily accessible to children. The question is, despite the idea to make Madea’s character a righteous grandmother or as a role model, is the theme of her films generally acceptable to be watched by children and teenagers? Conservative parents would probably disagree. Madea movies are loud with a lot of screaming and rudeness. It shows prostitute characters, adults smoking pot, rebellious children and being aggressive to law enforcement officers. Some would say it is not advisable to be watched by young children because it teaches them foul language and speaking rudely.
While elements of prostitution, drugs and violence are also present in other comedy movies, the difference probably lies in the character. Madea is supposed to be a hip grandmother but her character in the films show the opposite. Madea is a cantankerous character who always gets in trouble with the law. Many small children see their grandparents as righteous and well-mannered. Seeing the character of Madea will probably confuse them about the role of grandparents in the family.
But Madea continues to be loved by many audiences, especially with the African-American community. Although many did not seem to be impressed with the recent movie, Madea’s Witness Protection, she continues to make noises in the film industry and her character will probably live on for a long time.
