When it comes to Beavis and Butthead, you cannot simply go and say that one episode is better than another, especially when we are to consider that the main characters are dumb teenagers doing dumb things. Funny they were, from a satirical point of view, but good and better aren’t precisely the words I’d use.
Instead, I would say that the dumbest episode I saw from Beavis and Butthead was Pregnant Pause: some unfortunate circumstances make Beavis believe that he is pregnant, when in fact all he has to do is go to the loo.
Of course, there were quite a few other dumb episodes, but in this one Mike Judge must have asked himself: how far can I go? And this dumbness, if it isn’t taken lightly, proves that intelligent comedy does exist, especially in satirical series such as Beavis and Butthead.
So what happens? Beavis has some cramps and, because the TV says so, he must be pregnant. While the common sense says that only women can carry babies, Beavis just can’t stand still – even if he hasn’t scored, he can still be knocked-up!
And that is because he overheard (and misinterpreted) that you can get yourself pregnant. Furthermore, he knows that the pregnancy test should get colored if that happened, so when yellow appears (yellow being, by all means, a color)…
What was underlined in this episode, besides the dumbness of the characters, was that they do follow a logic of their own (although logic seems to be a very hollow word in this case). They have deductive powers, so they aren’t as idiotic as they may seem.
And while they are running around literally scared, the world still follows its own rules, impervious to what is happening.
Of course, as expected, everything is solved once Beavis goes to the toilet. He was just constipated.
As a conclusion, I’d like to say that the world was not at all impermeable to all the dumbness Beavis and Butthead spread. As said in a recent article, the world is getting more and more stupid. As a matter of fact, I am almost certain that somewhere, somehow, there is a boy-teenager that believes he is pregnant.
Nevertheless – still funny!
