GH: Welcome Home!

general-hospital50-anniversary-xl-01There will be a 50 hour marathon the end of March starting with the very first episode ever in 1963! This might be to show the younger viewers of General Hospital who’s who as they honor characters of the past. Be that as it may, for many of General Hospital’s longtime viewers it is a special treat.

It’s really exciting with all the different story lines these days. However it’s always nice when General Hospital returns to it’s roots. A sense of the past is what makes many stories work which is why new characters take awhile to catch on.

The series started with Dr. Steve Hardy and his trusted nurse, Jesse Brewer. They were the first “super couple” although not in a romantic sense. Jesse spent 28 years on General Hospital and was a main character beloved by many. It’s interesting to note although she married many times and became pregnant frequently she has no offspring or family in the present day Port Charles. Both remained on the soap until their deaths in the nineties.

Dr. Hardy has offspring roaming the halls of General Hospital even though he is the natural father to only one son, Jeff Webber. And this is where Heather first appears. She and Jeff have an affair. The two of them have an affair resulting in the birth of Steven Lars. have a son, Jeff’s mother, Helene, was never a character on the show. Elizabeth is Jeff’s daughter. But as Jeff left the show long before Elizabeth’s arrival, her mother is unknown. None of the original cast members remain.

Audrey Hardy wasn’t an original cast member having come to Port Charles in 1964 and became a love interest for Dr. Hardy. After a few unfortunate romances she married our favorite doctor. Audrey is still mentioned on the soap, being Elizabeth’s grandmother. Audrey had a son, Tom, who Steve adopted. Audrey and Steve were the backbone of General Hospital and are remembered fondly as if members of one’s own family. They too, might be thought of as a super couple! We look forward to seeing Audrey as she returns for the Nurses Ball, if only to see her in the audience!

Bobbie Jean Spencer will also be back. She had a turbulent past including being a prostitute until she became a nurse and arrived in Port Charles with her brother Luke. Her early years were fraught with unwise choices but she gradually became a respected member of the hospital staff. It will be interesting watching her and Carly together again although she has barely been mentioned these past years as being Carly’s mother.

Many more of the stars from the earlier years have plans to reappear for the Nurse’s Ball as General Hospital turns 50 including some who have died…this IS a soap opera!

This year’s Nurses Ball will mark the first time that the fictional event will be tied to a real life charity. The Foundation for Aids Research, amFar will join with ABC for the Nurses Ball to raise awareness of AIDS. The Nurses Ball airs on April 5th, 8th and 9th.

I’ve been watching since day one with my mom, who most of the time I remember her ironing during the show. Strange what we remember, 50 years ago! Looking forward to the Nurses’ Ball and seeing all the old timers arrival.

Unfortunately for a lot of us the marathon is on SoapNet, which was taken off the air. Hoping someone would post this on YouTube.

    • Pam says:

SoapNet is still on cable. You may not be able to get it if you don’t subscribe to certain channels. If you have cable, ask your service provider.

      • Lisa Wooten says:

Soapnet is owned by Disney. Disney cancelled Soapnet on our Comcast system & replaced it with cartoons. There is nothing Comcast can do about it. They tried.

  14. Penny Stone says:

What day does this start in March and what channel???? I have waiting for this for many many years !!!!!!

  15. I am not sure I am watching GH anymore. I have watched sinced the beginning with my mother. I am disgusted with the way the three characters from OLTL left, not because they wanted to, but because they had to. i was upset when they took OLTL off, but when I found out they were going to be on GH, I was happy. Robin has been thought over a year now, and we know she is still alive, but will Patrick ever know. It is frustrating. They start story lines, then they don’t finish them. The nurses ball some exciting, but can’t make up my mind whetehr I will watch or not. I quit watching GH since Starr, John and Todd left.

  24. Nancy Mancine says:

I looked on soapnet, (i have direct tv in GA) and its starting friday nite, but its not in any order, at 10pm Friday is an episode from 1963..i’m quessing its the first one.then the next 2 espisodes are the luke/laura wedding..then it flips around from 1980s’, and years in between..Not sure how they picked 50 espisodes..I know one is when BJ dies and Maxie gets her heart…1994 episode…. I can’t wait. I’ve been watching since 1979!

  25. Becky says:

I LOVE GH!! But my cable company doesn’t carry SOAPNET at all!! I wish they would put this online somehow for those of us who don’t have access to SOAPNET!!! I have been watching for 30+ years, and would LOVE to see the original shows!

  26. Florida09 says:

I have always loved GH. I so miss having the ABC Super Soap Weekend at MGM. I have some of the best autographs ever!!!!! All signed in my General Hospital The Complete Scrapbook. There is none other than Jackie Zeman. Such a gracious lady. Loves her fans!!!!!. Meet Steve Button and you’ll think you have known him a life time.

  27. Denise says:

My mom passed away in July 1995 but I remember sitting at her feet 50 years ago as a little girl watching General Hospital. Out of her 4 children I am the only one that watched the show and continue to watch. As a matter of fact My only son is named after one of the characters, Cameron Faulker, married at the time to Leslie, Laura’s Spencer’s mother. This marathon is truely a treat. Can’t wait.

  28. Carole says:

Our provider doesn’t have SoapNet anymore. Do you think these episodes might go on sale?

  29. June Haptonstall says:

Thank you to everyone involved with bringing back the Nurse’s Ball & so many of the previous such delightful characters!! My oldest daughter is actually named after the “Laura” character, so I especially enjoy the scenes with Genie Francis & Lynn Herring has always added so much sparkle to the show. I truly hope the Nurse’s Ball & the 80′s gang can continue on the show! Awesome job!!
