There will be a 50 hour marathon the end of March starting with the very first episode ever in 1963! This might be to show the younger viewers of General Hospital who’s who as they honor characters of the past. Be that as it may, for many of General Hospital’s longtime viewers it is a special treat.
It’s really exciting with all the different story lines these days. However it’s always nice when General Hospital returns to it’s roots. A sense of the past is what makes many stories work which is why new characters take awhile to catch on.
The series started with Dr. Steve Hardy and his trusted nurse, Jesse Brewer. They were the first “super couple” although not in a romantic sense. Jesse spent 28 years on General Hospital and was a main character beloved by many. It’s interesting to note although she married many times and became pregnant frequently she has no offspring or family in the present day Port Charles. Both remained on the soap until their deaths in the nineties.
Dr. Hardy has offspring roaming the halls of General Hospital even though he is the natural father to only one son, Jeff Webber. And this is where Heather first appears. She and Jeff have an affair. The two of them have an affair resulting in the birth of Steven Lars. have a son, Jeff’s mother, Helene, was never a character on the show. Elizabeth is Jeff’s daughter. But as Jeff left the show long before Elizabeth’s arrival, her mother is unknown. None of the original cast members remain.
Audrey Hardy wasn’t an original cast member having come to Port Charles in 1964 and became a love interest for Dr. Hardy. After a few unfortunate romances she married our favorite doctor. Audrey is still mentioned on the soap, being Elizabeth’s grandmother. Audrey had a son, Tom, who Steve adopted. Audrey and Steve were the backbone of General Hospital and are remembered fondly as if members of one’s own family. They too, might be thought of as a super couple! We look forward to seeing Audrey as she returns for the Nurses Ball, if only to see her in the audience!
Bobbie Jean Spencer will also be back. She had a turbulent past including being a prostitute until she became a nurse and arrived in Port Charles with her brother Luke. Her early years were fraught with unwise choices but she gradually became a respected member of the hospital staff. It will be interesting watching her and Carly together again although she has barely been mentioned these past years as being Carly’s mother.
Many more of the stars from the earlier years have plans to reappear for the Nurse’s Ball as General Hospital turns 50 including some who have died…this IS a soap opera!
This year’s Nurses Ball will mark the first time that the fictional event will be tied to a real life charity. The Foundation for Aids Research, amFar will join with ABC for the Nurses Ball to raise awareness of AIDS. The Nurses Ball airs on April 5th, 8th and 9th.
