A Blow To Civilization

Butthead: I wish I had a face on my butt. You could blow your nose in your underwear. Huh-huh-huh-huh-huh-huh.”

Beavis: “You wouldn’t need a hankie. Heh-heh-heh-heh-heh-heh.

And this is what Beavis and Butthead would probably say to all the criticism. And, by all means, they would be right to do so – and some articles said (just like some disclaimers during the show said) that they are both brain-damaged. They shouldn’t be taken too seriously.

All their comedy comes from the lack of a higher logic – they do have a common sense and they both can add 1 and 1. But they don’t really want it. They just want to sit in front of the TV all day every day. And if they do get up, they have some of the simplest (I’m using this word just because I don’t want to say stupidest) aims.

The humor of the show is the stupidity of the characters. And we have had that since the beginning of television, from Chaplin and Laurel and Hardy. They pulled pranks and they mocked those that didn’t know better because they didn’t want to know better.

This is also the case of Beavis and Butthead, with one exception: the duo has taken everything to the extreme and they showed the world where stupidity can lead.

Of course, this wasn’t an animation for little children to watch. This was an animation aimed exactly at the adults – in a way, the duo said look at what you’re doing to your children, and even look at what your children can become: brain damaged.

Don’t let your children ingest paint thinner – this is bad for the health, obviously. But if your child remains unattended, this will most likely happen (and I have written an article about that, about the banned episode when a child burned the trailer he was living in after watching Beavis and Butthead playing with fire).

Sarcasm and irony aren’t for children – everything is taken as a truth by them (or, at least, most of them). But adults should be the ones responsible.

Nowadays, there are tons of animations that are rated R. Beavis and Butthead should have been too. Right? But couldn’t you realize that unless the studio told you?

Be responsible.

Heh-heh-heh-heh-heh-heh and Huh-huh-huh-huh-huh-huh.
