On the 15th of October 1951, I Love Lucy began spreading the laughter with its first episode. 63 years have passed since then, and to this day this is considered one of the best television shows. Until this day, I Love Lucy is still funny and a paradigm as to how a comedy series should work.
So naturally everybody loves Lucy! But about which Lucy are we talking about? Is it the goofball Lucy Ricardo that struggled to become something else than a wife? Or Lucille Ball, the struggling actress behind the scenes and that became a pioneer of television shows and the first major female executive?
I believe we love them both. We love Lucy Ricardo for some of the funniest episodes in history, such as Lucy Does a Television Commercial – still trying to be a star, she accepts to appear in a commercial to a new health tonic. Little does she know that this potion contains alcohol – and when effects begin to show, the comedy ensues.
In the same way we love Lucille Ball, because of the many lifetimes she lived in a single life. It may sound contradictory, but it was exactly like this – she wasn’t just an on-screen model for women across America, but also in her private life. Words such as, love yourself first, and everything else falls into line didn’t come from one of her movies, but during serious interviews.
Ultimately, there is so much love for both of them because they taught us (whether we are men or women) that a smile will always get you a long way. If we look with confidence into the future, if we don’t frown when something unexpected happens, then everything will be just OK – and even more than that.
After all, it can be said that Lucy Ricardo’s life is completely based on Lucille Ball’s own experiences.
63 years have passed since I Love Lucy debuted. If there is something that we should remember, then it is this: I’m not funny. What I am is brave.
